NC Healthy Schools focuses on improving the health of students and staff by providing coordination and resources within the context of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model. The goal is to create students who are healthier, in school, in class, and ready to learn. Students who are healthier are more alert, more focused on learning, and miss less school. They not only learn better in every class, but they also learn lifelong healthy behaviors.
As part of school health related efforts, data drives decision-making at the local and state level, including use of YRBS and Profiles. NCDPI has administered YRBS since 1993 and Profiles since 1994, successfully achieving weighted data. School-Based Surveillance will be used to establish and strengthen systematic procedures to collect and report YRBS and Profiles data for policy and program improvements. Many health leaders, organizations and counties within North Carolina use YRBS and Profiles data to assess, plan, and monitor health education programs and policies. By continuing to promote and place significant emphasis on these two sources of data, North Carolina will be able to continue to monitor and seek funding for addressing negative health risk behaviors among youth in the state.
