The University of Washington is a center of excellence for STI education, clinical care, and research, and the UW-PTC has had continuous funding from CDC for over 30 years to educate providers in the region about best practices for and innovations in STI care. Through Component A funding, the UW-PTC will continue educating health care providers throughout the region and around the country by providing high quality, in-person and distance-learning content, as well as developing tools that can be used in clinics to improve STI care. The UW-PTC has longstanding partnerships with PCHD grantees, STD clinics and other key providers in the region, which will facilitate achievement of outcomes of the award. The UW-PTC has numerous faculty with specific expertise in a wide variety of STI areas and prioritizes teaching excellence. The UW-PTC is co-located and works closely with the Public Health-Seattle & King County (PHSKC) STD/HIV clinic, a pioneering STD specialty clinic which will serve as a model for implementing HIV prevention strategies into STD clinics throughout the region (Component A1). In addition, the UW has a tradition of training new leaders in the STI field through outstanding mentorship and has a robust infectious diseases fellowship with fellows who are passionate about STIs. With funding from Component A2, the UW-PTC will continue to recruit young physicians to the STI field. The National STD Curriculum (NSTDC), developed through funding to the UW-PTC, is a high-quality, online, interactive curriculum that has over 36,000 users and has provided over 90,000 continuing education credits in just 30 months. Through the use of a modular curriculum that teaches clinicians the principles of the CDC STD Treatment Guidelines based on adult-learning theory methods, the NSTDC has developed a ground-breaking method to engage learners and improve STI care. The UW-PTC will continue to develop novel approaches to enhance STI education, such as STD Treatment Guidelines Teaching Tools, PodCasts, and didactic videos created by STI experts to improve STI literacy among the medical community (Component C). In addition, the UW-PTC has led the way in the creation of online communities of STD experts, and will continue this work on a national level, as well as support implementation of these efforts on a local level through Component C. Finally, the UW-PTC will leverage the extensive experience in the creation of online curricula to create a novel and highly interactive curriculum for HIV prevention in STD specialty clinics (Component C1). Throughout each of these programs, the UW-PTC will undergo continuous evaluation to ensure that objectives are met. The UW-PTC has a proven track record of implementing CDC DSTDP initiatives and has the expertise, commitment, passion, and capacity to achieve the ambitious long-term goals of the NOFO, to decrease transmission of and morbidity and mortality from STIs and increasing capacity of providers and the number of trained experts to combat STIs.
