West Virginia Program to Increase Colorectal Cancer Screening - West Virginia Program to Increase Colorectal Cancer Screening West Virginia University (WVU) The West Virginia Program to Increase Colorectal Cancer Screening (WV PICCS) at West Virginia University aims to increase partner primary care clinic colorectal cancer screening rates to at least 15% over their baseline screening rate, with a secondary target of reaching the national goal of 80% or higher. The program focuses on changing protocols in primary care practices to integrate evidence-based interventions (EBIs) and increase referral and completion of screening. Health system partners will include clinics serving counties with high rates of colorectal cancer incidence, mortality, and late-stage diagnosis, and/or serving a disparate patient population. Priority is given to clinics with a screening rate less than the state screening rate of 68%. Health system partner clinics will complete readiness assessments, systematic reviews of their current use of electronic health records (EHR), identification of needed improvements to provider reports, and documentation of the ability to track stool-based test dissemination and completion. Health system partners will implement at least three EBIs including provider assessment/feedback activities, client reminders, provider reminder/recall systems, reduction of structural barriers, or patient navigation. Patient navigation will facilitate completion of stool-based screening and follow-up colonoscopies for uninsured patients with a positive stool-based screening test. Small media use tailored to the needs and population will enhance the EBIs. WV PICCS program staff will engage clinics and providers in ongoing technical assistance, EHR support, data collection and evaluation, professional development training, and quality improvement.
