Virgin Islands Tobacoo and Diabetes Program - The U.S. Virgin Islands faces significant health disparities, particularly with high rates of tobacco use and diabetes, which have a profound impact on the overall health of the community. The Virgin Islands Department of Health has extensive experience with addressing tobacco use and diabetes management. This project seeks to address these pressing issues through a multifaceted, community-based approach that reaches all demographic groups across the territory. Key initiatives will include implementing self-management programs for diabetes prevention, organizing community walks to promote physical activity and healthier lifestyles, training healthcare providers in Brief Tobacco Intervention to support effective tobacco cessation efforts, and conducting targeted outreach and education in underserved areas, schools, and senior living communities. In addition, we will host community forums designed to educate the public about the dangers of tobacco use and the importance of diabetes prevention and management. By engaging individuals and communities in a collaborative effort to reduce tobacco use and manage diabetes, our goal is to improve public health outcomes, particularly for those already living with diabetes. This project aims to empower residents with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to make informed decisions about their health, while promoting sustainable lifestyle changes that can reduce the burden of chronic diseases. Ultimately, we envision a healthier, more resilient U.S. Virgin Islands, where all residents have the opportunity to thrive free from the impacts of tobacco-related illnesses and diabetes.
