Oklahoma Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System - Oklahoma’s health status has been ranked within the bottom 25% since 1997 due to a large burden of chronic diseases, poor health behaviors, high number of insured, and high preventable hospitalizations. Health challenges include high percentage of households with food insecurity, high prevalence of non-medical drug use and premature death rate (United Health Foundation, America’s Health Rankings- 2023). The Oklahoma Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System program (OKBRFSS) ongoing surveillance of these critical public health issues is essential in order to track the health of Oklahomans, to measure the effectiveness of public health interventions, and identify high risk and disparate populations. The OKBRFSS provides key data to state, tribal and local health officials that are working to improve the state’s health status. The OKBRFSS will continue to collaborate with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to collect high quality representative data via multi-modes of surveillance about specific behavioral risk factors, health practices, and health care access of Oklahoma residents. The following optional modules will be included in the 2024 Oklahoma BRFSS survey: Arthritis, Caregiver, Adverse Childhood Experiences, Marijuana Use, Other Tobacco Use, Sugar-Sweetened Beverages, and Firearm Safety. The Oklahoma BRFSS will continue to require extensive training of all Interviewers, regular monitoring, and conduct monthly meetings to ensure the survey integrity. This data will be analyzed, interpreted and made available through reports, statistical briefs and OK2SHARE (Oklahoma’s web-based data query system). Data is also available through the online interactive the State of the State Health (SOSH) dashboard describing how health behaviors affect the overall health status of Oklahoma residents. Additionally, OKBRFSS staff provide consultation and technical assistance to partners regarding analyses, interpretation, and use of the surveillance data and underlying methodologies.
