Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS): Impact on Population Health 2024-2029 - Nevada is one of 50 states and US territories conducting the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey with financial and technical assistance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This state-based telephone surveillance system is designed to collect data on individual risk behaviors and preventive health practices related to the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in the United States. BRFSS respondents must specifically represent Nevada’s population. UNR, in collaboration with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), as a subrecipient, proposes to conduct the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey for five years (August 1, 2024-July 31, 2029). Information from the survey will be used for health planning, program evaluation, monitoring health objectives, and monitoring health disparities in underrepresented populations. Information provided by the BRFSS is not available from other sources in the state. In addition, because it is part of a nationwide surveillance system, the BRFSS provides comparisons to other states. The Board of Regents, NSHE obo UNR (University of Nevada, Reno, Nevada Center for Surveys, Evaluation, and Statistics) (herein UNR) agrees to provide the following services and reports according to the identified timeframes outlined in the proposal: The BRFSS sample will be split between the two universities, and ICF Macro, Inc. will also be hired as a continuing vendor. UNLV will be completing: the Clark County Landline Sample, one-third of the rural county landline sample, and one third of the cell phone sample. With the additional samples funded through various state agencies this will be approximately 4000 phone surveys (minimum target). UNR will be completing: one-third of the Washoe County Landline Sample, one-third of the rural county landline sample, and one-third of the cell phone sample. With the additional samples funded through various state agencies this will be approximately 2500 phone surveys (minimum target) between UNLV and UNR, and another 1500 completed interviews by ICF, Macro, for a total minimum target sample of 4000 and a maximum target sample of 6000. The Contractor (UNR) agrees to receive and split the monthly landline and cell phone samples and provide the split samples to UNLV and ICF. The Contractor (UNR) agrees to compile the survey datasets monthly (UNR dataset and the UNLV dataset; ICF will compile their own data sets) and submit these data to the CDC, Behavioral Surveillance Branch (BSB), in the format described by the CDC within 30 days after the end of each data collection month. The Nevada BRFSS project team will focus on targeting specific underrepresented populations in Nevada in terms of both marketing and data dissemination and usage, specifically the American Indian/Alaska Native and the Latinx/Hispanic communities.
