Idaho Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) - In Idaho, chronic diseases, unintentional injury, and vaccine-preventable diseases comprise nine of the ten leading causes of death. National monitoring systems do not provide state and local health officials with the state and sub-state data they need to assess health status, understand emergent issues, identify at-risk populations, address health disparities, or implement public health interventions at local levels. The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare proposes to work under a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to plan, develop, and implement the Idaho Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) for the period August 1, 2024 - July 31, 2025. The Idaho BRFSS will use a statistically based, multi-mode, population probability survey to gather data from consenting Idaho adults aged 18 and older regarding their health and health practices. Idaho BRFSS data will enable state public health leadership, program managers, and sub-state public health officials, and other stakeholders to assess the health status of Idaho adults and to determine direction and progress toward reducing preventable morbidity and mortality. Short-term outcomes include increased access to higher quality and more timely data collected and analyzed; increased dissemination of analytical results to state public health programs, regional health officials, non-governmental health organizations, and other stakeholders; and increased number of completed interviews with BRFSS survey respondents. The Idaho BRFSS will implement defined strategies to achieve these short-term outcomes. Strategies will focus on collecting and analyzing quality data, identifying health indicators and analyzing data to inform strategic plans and activities, and disseminating analytical results using internal and external communications and social media. Targeted evaluation and performance measures will be used to determine progress toward desired short-term outcomes. Short-term outcomes will lay the foundation toward achieving intermediate outcomes which include Idaho BRFSS data being used to identify health risk behaviors and health status of populations and data being used to inform development of effective prevention and disease management policies and programs. Ultimately, information from the Idaho BRFSS will be used to inform efforts reducing preventable morbidity and mortality from chronic disease, unintentional injury, and vaccine-preventable disease.
