New York State Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System - With requested funding New York (NY) will sustain and enhance ongoing state-based public health surveillance activities through the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). The proposed activities will build community partnerships to increase awareness and response to the BRFSS, promote health equity in data collection, analysis, and dissemination, ensure timely access to BRFSS data and increase the use of BRFSS data in public health action. NY will administer the BRFSS Survey annually. The NY BRFSS Program will collaborate with state and regional health partners to determine and develop state-added content for the annual survey, administer the BRFSS using CATI-assisted random-digit-dial telephone surveys, monitor data collection and transmission to CDC, implement methods for improving the timeliness and efficiency of data collection and explore innovative data collection methods. To promote the use of data from the BRFSS to address health disparities, NY proposes data analysis and dissemination activities. The NY BRFSS Program will disseminate data in multiple formats, including datasets for state health programs and the public, reports on key health indicators and interactive dashboards. The NY BRFSS program will provide technical support on the analysis and interpretation of BRFSS, facilitate meetings with the NY BRFSS Workgroup and community advisors, respond to data requests and coordinate BRFSS reporting and dissemination. To demonstrate the outcomes and support quality improvement, NY proposes performance measurement and program evaluation activities. Planned evaluation will track the implementation of activities and demonstrate whether they have been associated with improved access to BRFSS data and expanded use.
