Iowa Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System - The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is an ongoing state-based telephone survey of adults. As a cross-cutting data collection tool of a wide range of health risk behaviors, clinical preventive health practices, chronic health conditions and health care access, BRFSS is the chief tool used in Iowa for ongoing, systematic collection, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of data regarding adult health-related events. Findings and conclusions based on data collected through the Iowa Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (IA BRFSS) are used to inform public health and human services stakeholders and decision-makers about a broad array of population health information, including chronic disease prevalence, health risk factors, preventive health services and factors that influence morbidity and early mortality in Iowa. IA BRFSS data help to evaluate programs and policies; measure and monitor burden and disease trends; provide data for public health programs for planning and data-driven decision making; compare demographic groups to examine disparities in health status; detect emerging health problems; quantify the magnitude of health problems; and inform prioritization of the allocation of limited health resources. Moreover, IA BRFSS data are vital in tracking progress toward state and national health objectives, monitoring changes in health status resulting from health policies and legislation; detecting public health impacts resulting from public health programs and practices, and enabling comparison of Iowa’s health status to that of other states and the nation. Through this application, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (Iowa HHS) is requesting funds to continue the IA BRFSS survey for the next five-year cycle and allow the completion of administration of the 2024 annual survey.
