LIVERWISE: Healthy Liver, Healthy Life! - LIVERWISE: Healthy Liver, Healthy Life! Project Abstract Chronic liver disease (CLD) is a progressive deterioration of healthy liver functions that include the production of clotting factors and other proteins, detoxification of harmful products of metabolism, and excretion of bile. In 2017, CLD was the 12th leading cause of death in the US, accounting for approximately 41,473 deaths. Importantly, there have been marked increases in diagnoses, hospitalizations, and death making CLD a growing threat to health and well being. Notable disparities exist with regards to both risk factors for CLD and its prevalence. Both Hispanic men and women have a rate of chronic liver disease that is nearly twice that of their non-Hispanic white counterparts. In addition to having a higher incidence of liver disease, Hispanics also have a more aggressive pattern of disease and overall worse treatment outcomes. The purpose of LIVERWISE: Healthy Liver, Healthy Life! is to expand and advance CDC’s education, outreach, and public awareness activities to strengthen the science base for prevention, education, and public health awareness leading to meaningful patient outcomes for liver disease, with a focus on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NALFD), a chronic disease area that does not currently have dedicated CDC resources. Under LIVERWISE, the National Alliance for Hispanic Health (Alliance) will: (1) increase data collection and dissemination; (2) develop and increase use of tools to fill NAFLD-related data gaps; (3) implement educational efforts that increase public awareness of NAFLD; and, (4) increase use of best practices by health care professionals in NAFLD screening, referral, treatment, and disease management. Through community driven efforts, LIVERWISE will reduce disparities in the incidence, early detection, and effective treatment and management of CLD in underserved communities.
