Food Allergy AWARE: Advancing Wellness, Awareness and Resources to Educate - An estimated 33 million Americans, or roughly 10% of the population, has one or more food allergy (FA). This includes 1 in 10 adults and 1 in 13 children. More than half (51%) of adults, and 42% of children, have experienced a severe FA reaction that could potentially lead to a life-threatening outcome. Food Allergy AWARE will increase awareness and knowledge of the growing prevalence, societal cost, and burden of FA as a potentially life threatening, chronic disease among public health professionals, primary care clinicians, affected patients, caregivers, and the public. The activities and messaging will highlight the need for FA specialist referral and testing to ensure accurate diagnosis and optimal management; the social and emotional burden FA imposes on patients and families; the importance of consistent access to epinephrine and effective training in its emergency use; and the ongoing disparities in access to care and relatively poor outcomes observed within minority and under-resourced populations. Evidence-based, on-demand education programs and public awareness/marketing resources will be further developed, refined, and disseminated to implement best practices in FA diagnosis, management, treatment, and prevention, with a focus on deploying and testing the impact of these programs within several marginalized communities in the U.S. before scaling nationally.
