Building Osteoporosis Networks and Engagement Using Partnerships (BONEUP) - ABSTRACT: Purpose: BHOF will deliver comprehensive education, outreach, and public awareness initiatives on osteoporosis and related bone disorders. Emphasize best practices in the prevention, and treatment of osteoporosis, targeting high-risk demographics, individuals with comorbidities, underserved communities, and public health and healthcare professionals. The project’s goals are to 1. Enhance Osteoporosis Knowledge and Data Accessibility: Improve understanding of osteoporosis across by developing resources and tools that identify and address gaps in knowledge and practice. 2. Increase Public and Professional Engagement in Osteoporosis: Foster public awareness and professional engagement through educational resources that promote bone health best practices. 3. Strengthen Bone Health/Osteoporosis Infrastructure and Partnerships: Build the infrastructure for improvements in bone health through partnerships with healthcare providers, professional organizations, and public health entities. OUTCOMES: Strategy 1: Data dissemination for osteoporosis. Activities: Convening and collaboration among past, current, and new partners. Short Term Outcomes: Coordination and alignment of data. Compilation and review of data. New/updated indicator reports. Long Term Outcomes: Increase distribution channels and populations reached. Changes Achieved: Increased awareness among public health professionals. Outputs: Comprehensive reports on findings, gaps and recommendations. Indicator reports, updated brochures, and awareness/educational materials. Dissemination of information through partner organizations and social media. Strategy 2: Develop survey tools to fill the data gaps. Activities: Develop general population survey questions related to: 1) Early detection bone density screening (DXA); 2) Nutrition and physical activity guidelines for the prevention of bone loss across the lifespan; 3) Chronic disease management, bone density monitoring and treatment of osteoporosis; 4) Fall prevention and fracture prevention. Short Term Outcomes: Develop survey questions for all target populations. Changes Achieved: Findings on knowledge gaps will serve as recommendations for future activities and campaign messaging. Outputs: Survey questions to be used in future health surveys via collaborations with partner organizations. Strategy 3: Develop and disseminate educational activities that support public awareness Activities: Update Peak Bone Mass paper1 to provide evidence-based guidance for helping individuals achieve peak bone mass early in life. Develop resources for professionals to distribute. Expand campaign to increase awareness about osteoporosis and best practices. Conduct outreach, host activities using the new peer educator network and consumer Fracture Risk Calculator (FRC), working with partners serving ethnic and comorbid populations. Update content on BHOF’s Spanish website and translate Healthy Bones for Life™ webinar. Outcomes: Increase knowledge among the Black and Latinx population. Expand reach among networks. With the BHA Working Group, customize resources to be culturally relevant. Changes Achieved: Increase knowledge and awareness about osteoporosis. Outputs: Media campaigns, culturally appropriate materials. Strategy 4: Educational activities and resources for health care professionals. Activities: Expand partnerships to increase clinical awareness. Develop and promote a continuing education (CE) micro-credential in bone health for nurse practitioners in women’s health. Promote resources and activities through scientific journals. Conduct presentations at meetings and conferences. Short Term Outcomes: Expand partnerships to increase distribution of materials. Long Term Outcomes: Improvements in screening, diagnosis, and treatment protocols as they align to regional, ethnic, demographic needs. Changes Achieved: Increase awareness of treatment and management of osteoporosis across all populations.
