The Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) and Sudden Death in the Young (SDY) Case Registry - Utah is applying to participate in Component A and B of The Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) and Sudden Death in the Young (SDY) Case Registry grant. This project aims to further improve and standardize data collection for sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) and sudden death in the young (SDY) cases in Utah. The project will focus on conducting timely and high-quality surveillance of child deaths, enhancing partnerships, and disseminating data to inform prevention efforts. By utilizing the CDC's case definitions and guidelines, the project will collect, review, and categorize cases, and provide prevention recommendations through the Utah Child Fatality Review Committee (CFRC) and Advanced Clinical Review Committee (ACRC). The project will also collaborate with the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner (OME) and other stakeholders to improve investigation practices and death reporting. The expected outcomes include improved surveillance data, increased stakeholder and community awareness of risk factors, and improved policies and practices to reduce SUID and SDY deaths. The project includes efforts to identify and prevent all SUID and SDY case in Utah, but will focus prevention efforts on disproportionately impacted populations and identified risk factors and behaviors. The evaluation plan includes performance measures to track the progress and impact of the project, such as timelines of case identification, review, and data input, quality of the reporting, sample collection and family consent, safe sleep practices, breastfeeding rates, smoking rates, and overall reductions in infant and child deaths. Through these efforts, the project aims to reduce SUID and SDY deaths in Utah and promote data-driven best practices and policies.
