SEARHC WISEWOMAN - Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) has an innovative, integrated approach that provides cardiovascular health education and support to women in rural Alaska, with a focus on Alaska Natives and American Indian women. Using GIS data, this rural WISEWOMAN program sends health educators to remote, underserved areas to provide educational materials, screening tools, health coaching, and referrals for women residing in these geographical areas. Eligible participants are low-income, uninsured, and underinsured women between the ages of 35-64 who have heart disease and stroke-risk factors that can benefit from our services which promote healthy behaviors and lifestyle modifications.
Our evidence-based approach focuses on reducing cardiovascular risk factors, specifically improving blood pressure control. Using a team-based care model, patients receive free health screenings, medical care and support to measure their blood pressure and take medications as directed, participate in skill-based education to modify and improve their diet and increase physical activities and complete smoking cessation programs. Working with local community resources to offer regular exercise opportunities, increased access to healthy, fresh food, and collaboration with area social support programs will help encourage weight management and blood pressure control efforts.
By integrating evidence-based lifestyle programs and community-based resources into our healthcare system, WISEWOMAN can prevent and reduce key risk factors for heart disease and stroke to rural, underserved women in Southeast Alaska. By eliminating the economic, social, and other obstacles to healthcare, we will be able to give our patients the opportunity to live the healthiest life possible.
