Nuestras Voces Adelante/Our Voices Moving Forward - New tobacco products, high rates of tobacco product use among Hispanic youth, and limited community access to tobacco prevention and cessation services are posing new threats to the health of Hispanic communities. Nuestras Voces Adelante (Our Voices— Moving Forward or NVA) expands on our ongoing efforts and represents a culturally proficient and community-driven effort to address disparities by managing and growing our national network or partners; providing training and technical assistance to Network members and CDC-funded programs through a Community of Practice focused on Social Determinants of Health (SDOH); expanding evidence-based and promising practices for policy, system, and environmental (PSE) change in Hispanic communities; and, promoting effective mass reach health communications (e.g., September: Hispanic Heritage; November: Lung Cancer Awareness, January: Poverty Awareness, April: Minority Health Awareness, and May: Mental Health Awareness).
Our track record of collaborations include current efforts on tobacco and cancer with the: American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Lung Association, Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, Asian Pacific Partners for Empowerment, Advocacy, and Leadership ,Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, ChangeLab Solutions, Facing Hereditary Cancer Empowered (FORCE),George Washington Cancer Center, Geographic Health Equity Alliance Network, National Behavioral Health Network, National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable, National League of Cities, National LGBT Cancer Network, SelfMade Health Network, and the Truth Initiative.
The NVA Network will also include (1) a regional network of leading Hispanic CBOs Regional Lead Agencies (RLAs) located in San Diego, CA, Orlando, FL, Chicago, IL, Kansas City, KS, New York, NY and El Paso, TX. (2) training-of-trainers on evidence-based interventions in tobacco control and cancer prevention and management and (3) support Network and CDC efforts in mass reach health communications, data technical assistance and disseminations. These activities will be carried out in collaboration with NTCP and NCCCP to address the needs of Hispanic communities throughout the US.
To guide activities the Alliance will convene an Evaluation Team (NET) comprised of key Alliance staff, an external evaluator, representatives from partner organizations, and expert advisors, as needed. The external evaluator, Shattuck and Associates, are experienced with CDC’s Framework for Program Evaluation and have 23 years of experience evaluating national, multi-site.
Moreover, our efforts on tobacco issues are unique as for decades the Alliance refused funding from tobacco companies and was an early partner working with NTCP and NCCCP to address the needs of the growing Hispanic population.
