The University of Montana Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities (UM RIIC) has proposed a project, funded by Component A of funding opportunity CDC-RFA-DP22-2207, that will support the Montana Perinatal Quality Collaborative (MPQC), a quality improvement (QI) initiative that will be undertaken in partnership with Montana’s State Health Agency, Montana Department of Public Health & Human Services (MT DPHHS); the Montana Hospital Association (MHA); the Montana Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC) and Enhancing Reviews and Surveillance to Eliminate Maternal Mortality (ERASE MM); Montana’s Maternal Health Innovation (MHI) grant, the Alliance on Innovation in Maternal (AIM) Health initiative in Montana, and other partners engaged in perinatal health in the state of Montana. The MPQC will utilize $275,000 per year for each of the five years of this project period, starting in October 2022, to achieve the following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-aligned outcomes: 1) Increase QI efforts to improve perinatal health through the implementation of five of AIM’s Primary Patient Safety Bundles (each as one statewide QI initiative per year, starting with Severe Hypertension in Pregnancy) in a minimum of 75% of Montana’s birthing facilities and 90% of Montana’s birthing facilities primarily serving AI/AN populations; 2) Increase QI initiatives that prioritize health disparities by overlaying the AIM Patient Safety Supporting Bundle Reduction of Peripartum Racial and Ethnic Disparities on each of the AIM Primary Bundles; and 3) Increase support provided to facilities located on or near Montana’s seven Indian Reservations, facilities who serve a disproportionately high percentage of AI/AN patients, and facilities located in rural and remote communities facing resource challenges that may otherwise prevent participation in QI initiatives.
