The program method to combatting unhealthy behaviors that could lead to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer is the creation of a culturally connectedness program that emphasizes healthy diet of traditional foods, increased physical activity through traditional cultural practices and wellness gatherings where elders teach about traditional ways of healing. Our approach to addressing theses problems through this grant will be to focus more on prevention and building positive cultural health habits earlier in the life. This grant will therefore continue funding for Project Venture as our implementation model, research supported program specifically developed for indigenous youth, a SAMHSA Model Program identified in the National High Risk Youth Study as “the most effective program serving American Indian/Alaska Native youth.”
