The American College of Rheumatology (ACR) will utilize physician centered, evidence-based education to advance systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus) knowledge, skills and abilities of clinical healthcare providers (which we define as medical doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and medical students). Simultaneously, the ACR will increase lupus awareness and management skills of healthcare professionals including nurses and community health workers. Building upon over a decade of experience in addressing lupus related disparities and by engagement of the ACR membership, a network of collaborators, and persons living with lupus, the ACR will 1) implement educational sessions for healthcare providers and medical students on the signs and symptoms of lupus with an emphasis on differential diagnosis; 2) expand the quality and use of SLE specific electronic health record tools and disease activity assessments to establish quality measures; 3) increase the availability of culturally and linguistically appropriate lupus education focused on increasing lupus awareness, lupus disparities, and SLE symptom recognition; and 4) expand available pediatric-to-adult lupus transition and care coordination materials by engaging and education school based health professionals. By implementing these educational and programmatic strategies the project will address gaps and inequities in lupus symptom recognition, care, and disease management by health care professionals engaged in the treatment of persons at-risk for or living with lupus.
