Georgia Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (GA-BRFSS) - Project Abstract Summary The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) is charged with protecting the health of Georgians and conducting surveillance activities to identify and implement effective and efficient programs targeting vulnerable Georgians. Based on this authority, DPH conducts the Georgia Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (GA-BRFSS). The purpose of the GA-BRFSS is to annually collect, analyze, and monitor high quality surveillance data on Georgians’ health risk behaviors and health conditions at the state and sub-state level. Data are analyzed to effectively identify health disparities and prioritize health risk behaviors among Georgia adults that contribute to the occurrence of the top 10 leading causes of death and morbidity. During this project period, the GA-BRFSS will maintain and increase its current relationships with both the internal and external public health programs, increasing their access to quality and timely GA-BRFSS data, as well as increase the use of the GA-BRFSS data to inform public health action. GA-BRFSS will achieve the NOFO’s short, intermediate and long-term outcomes by implementing the following: • Post 2018-2023 GA-BRFSS on DPH CHIE server. • Provide access of the GA-BRFSS data to all CHIE epidemiologists (Allowing DPH program-specific epidemiologists to access GA-BRFSS data enables data to be appropriately and effectively analyzed based on program needs and geographical coverage (i.e., 18 Public Health Districts, 12 Division of Aging regions, 14 Division of Family and Children Services areas and 5 Cancer Coalition regions, etc.) • Provide data access and SAS programs to other DPH programs to analyze their specific modules and address appropriate health disparities and target vulnerable population. • Conduct one training per year for all GA-BRFSS Data Users. • Produce data tables to be posted on the DPH Online Analytic Statistical Information System (OASIS). • Present current data to program staff at planning meetings to make sure appropriate BRFSS measures are included in all programs’ strategic plan and grant applications. Increased access to the annual GA-BRFSS data and improve the use of the GA-BRFSS to inform public health actions during the next three years will contribute to the achievement of the short, intermediate and long-term outcomes including: • Increased access to quality and timely GA-BRFSS data that are collected and analyzed by GA-BRFSS program and other program-specific epidemiologists. • Increased dissemination to internal and external public health professionals and stakeholders to determine Georgians health risk behaviors and health status. • Increased GA-BRFSS data use by public health organizations to identify health risk behaviors and better address the health status of all Georgians. • Improved the utilization of GA-BRFSS data to inform the development of effective prevention and disease management programs, policies and services. And, • Increased GA-BRFSS data use to develop informed public health policies that improve Georgians’ health.
