ARKANSAS BEHAVIORAL RISK FACTOR SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM (BRFSS) SURVEY - ARKANSAS BEHAVIORAL RISK FACTOR SURVEILLANCE SURVEY PROGRAM Project Abstract Summary Since 1993, Arkansas has continuously participated in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey. BRFSS is a state-based system of random digit-dialing telephone and mixed-mode health surveys that target non-institutionalized adults, ages 18 years and older. Arkansas uses landline and cellular phones to conduct the survey. In Arkansas, numerous internal and external public health-related programs support the BRFSS program. These include the Arkansas Department of Health Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Public Health, Arkansas Department of Health’s Chronic Disease Program, Immunization Program, and HIV/AIDS Program, and Arkansas Minority Health Commission. Arkansas BRFSS data are widely disseminated using a variety of tools, which include peer-reviewed publications, factsheets, national and local presentations, strategic planning reports, brochures, graphic information system (GIS) maps, and the Arkansas BRFSS web site. As a critical tool for advancing the practice of public health, BRFSS continues to be adaptable and can accommodate urgent issues easily to identify and monitor emerging health problems. Arkansas BRFSS requests assistance to engage in the following activities. First, continue collection of data on general population behaviors that contribute to the occurrence of preventable chronic diseases and injuries and other public health problems. Second, assist in the analysis and dissemination of BRFSS data to various ADH and non-ADH programs. Third, promote BRFSS data for purposes such as developing state plans to reduce the burden of disease, identifying health disparities, understanding differences in health outcomes, and educating the public about community health issues.
