As a Component B organization, the People with IDD Healthy Brain Initiative (PwIDD-HBI) addresses stigma, early diagnosis, and culturally relevant care to engage decades of collaboration with a robust network of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (PwIDD), their caregivers, health care providers, and community-based organizations (CBOs) that are supporting PwIDD. Guided by the Healthy Brain Initiative Road Map Series and the National Task Group (NTG) on Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia Practices ‘My Thinker’s Not Working’ National Strategy for PwIDDs, PwIDD-HBI will develop and implement public health strategies to improve the quality of life of PwIDD by raising awareness of ADRDs among PwIDD as a public health issue and support caregivers to care for PwIDD and care for themselves. The purpose of this project is to concentrate current efforts in ADRD and PwIDD fields into one community of practice for PwIDD, caregivers (paid and unpaid), healthcare providers, public health and policy stakeholders. A healthy brain community of practice for PwIDD will be a “one-stop space” that offers products, trainings, and materials to raise awareness of ADRDs among PwIDD decrease disparities for those experiencing ADRD and improve PwIDD and caregiver’s quality of life. As a result, PwIDD-HBI will have the following outcomes: 1. Developed a Healthy Brain Initiative website. 2. Developed Healthy Brain Webinar Series for Caregivers and Health Care Providers. 3. Produced three Healthy Brain videos for PwIDD and their caregivers. 4. Finalized and disseminated Nutritional and Dietary Guidelines for PwIDD with ADRD. 5. Finalized and disseminated Universal Curriculum for Caregivers, ID and Dementia Package for PwIDD, and Health Practice Guidelines for Primary Health Care Providers . 6. Integrated Geriatric CEU Modules for PwIDD and their Caregivers within ENGAGE-IL GWEP’s brain health materials and products. 7. Offered HealthMatters Program Train the Trainer, health promotion intervention for heart health. 8. Worked with multiple partners to (a) examine the utility of adopting an instrument such as an adapted Dementia Screening Questionnaire’ (b) Finalize development and disseminate social care practice guidelines to community organizations and professionals that address assessment, service development and life planning for adults with an ID presenting with symptoms of dementia; (c) establish services and policies that promote supportive communities and workplaces for PwIDD who have dementia and their caregivers; (d) Encourage provider organizations in the United States to implement screenings of their older-age clientele with an ID who are at-risk of or affected by dementia.
