The West Virginia Program to Increase Colorectal Cancer Screening (WV PICCS) at WVU aims to increase partner primary care clinic colorectal cancer screening to at least 15% over the baseline screening rate, with a secondary target of reaching the national goal of 80% and beyond. The program focuses on changing protocols in primary care practices to increase referral and completion of screening. Health system partners will be identified in clinics serving counties with high rates of colorectal cancer late-stage diagnosis and/or serving a disparate patient population. Priority is given to clinics with a screening rate of less than 60%. Health system partner clinics will complete assessments and a systematic review of their current use of electronic health records (EHR) and identification of improvements. Health system partners will participate in provider assessment/feedback activities and implement other evidence-based interventions (EBIs) such as client reminders, provider reminder/recall systems, or reduction of structural barriers. Supportive activities of patient navigation (PN) and small media will be used to enhance the EBIs. PN will help facilitate follow-up colonoscopies for uninsured patients with a positive stool-based screening test. WV PICCS program staff will engage clinics and providers in ongoing technical assistance, EHR support, data collection and evaluation, professional development training, and quality improvement.
