The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) is part of the Alaska Tribal Health System (ATHS), which is a statewide voluntary affiliation of Tribal Health Organizations (THOs) providing health services to Alaska Native (AN) people. The ATHS is comprised of a tribal network of over 182 village clinics, 58 tribal health centers and seven hospital facilities. The ATHS, represented by 15 regional tribal organizations, is divided into eight major geographic regions. In the ATHS, emergency, chronic, acute and preventive health care services are provided at the village, subregional and regional levels by the THOs. Because most villages are so remote, provision of primary care is provided at the village level by community members trained as Community Health Aides and Community Health Practitioners (CHA/Ps).During this project, ANTHC will conduct a comprehensive needs assessment aimed to identify drivers of COVID-19 & influenza vaccine hesitancy, influential messengers, and community-acceptable approaches. From this needs assessment, ANTHC will develop materials and approaches to disseminate flu and COVID-19 vaccination information to influential messengers within these remote communities.To best serve our target population, the CHA/Ps, CHA/P Directors and THO Clinical Directors in the Tribal communities will serve as the primary target audience for this grant. These agents will distribute the developed educational materials and serve the AN residents in rural communities. This project is leveraging an already established communication system within the ATHS. The main objectives of this project are to: 1) equip influential messengers, 2) increase vaccination opportunities, and 3) enhance provider partnership.
