The Utah Department of Health and the Wyoming Department of Health will partner to conduct a single maternal mortality review. Utah has conducted reviews of pregnancy-associated deaths since 1995, while Wyoming has identified maternal mortality as an emerging priority and seeks to establish a review process. The purpose of our project is to improve our maternal mortality review processes, to widely disseminate the committee findings and recommendations, and to support implementation of the committee recommendations. In addition to the joint review, Utah and Wyoming intend to increase awareness of the Maternal Mortality Review Committee’s function, findings and recommendations for action; improve case ascertainment; improve the quality of vital statistics data; demonstrate the ability of MMRC to react to emerging trends in data to produce meaningful findings for dissemination; establish a formal partnership with the UT and WY Perinatal Quality Collaboratives for assistance with implementation of MMRC recommendations; participate in national and regional efforts related to data aggregation; and improve efforts to understand the impact of health equity as it relates to maternal mortality. Through partnership and these activities, our long-term goal is to decrease the rates of severe maternal morbidity and mortality in Utah and Wyoming.
