This project will take place in Hardeman County, Tennessee. Our long-term goal is to decrease the obesity rate in Hardeman County through sustainable strategies designed to improve nutrition and increase physical activity. The purpose of this work is to enhance community capacity to expand implementation of evidence-based strategies to 1) increase access to healthier food and, 2) improve the connectivity of the built environment for physical activity, especially walking activities. We will accomplish this via a community-based participatory approach, using CDC's CHANGE (Community Health Assessment aNd Group Evaluation) tool, to engage communities in developing a community action plan. Community coalitions, consisting of a broad base of stakeholders in each of nine municipalities in the county, will be developed to engineer and implement specific evidence-based strategies for nutrition and physical activity that most closely reflect the identified needs and strengths of their own neighborhoods and residents. By the end of this project, we anticipate significant changes in several nutrition and physical activity outcomes, including: increased access to places that provide access to healthier foods; increased healthier food sales; increased access to safe and accessible places for physical activity, especially those that promote walking. The expertise, collaborations, and facilities of the University of Tennessee (UT) are uniquely suited to conduct the proposed project. The project team will benefit from the existing infrastructure at UT Extension and UT Knoxville, as well as a vast network of public and private partnerships in Hardeman County.
