Arkansas ranks 48th on national health indicators, and life expectancy has been consistently lower than the US estimates. Statewide, of the 3,004,279 citizens, 35.7% are obese and 31% report no physical activity. Obesity among preschoolers is a serious national problem, with 23% of preschool children overweight or obese. Arkansas has an urgent need for public health interventions that work. The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is already active in a range of prevention activities targeting these public health obstacles. With statewide partnerships with state agencies, federally funded groups, local communities, universities and professional groups, UAMS is well situated to expand this important work and offer sustainable health programs that can be evaluated and create positive outcomes. UAMS, in cooperation with vital leadership and stakeholders around the state, will achieve specific goals and strategies to decrease obesity and increase physical activity and nutrition in Arkansas’s highest risk counties. Specifically, we will a) develop and implement food service guidelines in food pantries, early childhood education centers, developmental disability (DD) day centers, and local parks; b) create interventions supportive of breastfeeding through continuity of care and community support by recruiting and partnering with family practice clinics, early childhood education centers, and DD day centers and by offering continuing medical education hours and early childhood center and DD center professional development training; c) join forces with local communities and partners to create activity-friendly routes and connect everyday destinations by implementing local policies to include bike routes, sidewalks, and trails that increase safety and access for all abilities; d) implement and integrate nutrition standards and physical activity standards into early childhood education centers across the state by changing the Quality and Imp rovement Rating System in Arkansas to increase physical activity, increase nutrition and physical activity education to staff, and decrease screen time. UAMS will change the public health landscape for targeted population groups through the CDC’s DP18-1807 funding opportunity.
