The purpose is to assist states in decreasing dental caries, oral health disparities, and other co-morbid chronic diseases associated with poor oral health. Kansas Bureau of Oral Health (KBOH) will accomplish these outcomes through implementing priority strategies such as school sealant programs (including promoting adherence to infection prevention guidelines), supporting and increasing community water fluoridation, conducting oral health surveillance, and optionally integrating oral health with our project to address chronic disease risk factors associated with consumption of sugar sweetened beverages. The proposed program will replace FOA 13-1307 [FY 2013-FY 2018]. This proposal adds important programmatic strategies to target efforts on specific population groups disproportionately affected by sugar sweetened beverage consumption. Successful implementation of these strategies will result in decreases in dental caries, oral health disparities, and other co-morbid chronic diseases. The vital work that has been accomplished in the past five years will be expanded to address population oral health and dental disease disparities informed from the data collection and analysis of: KS School Screening and Sealant Programs; KS Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS); community water fluoridation; state surveillance system utilizing Basic Screening Surveys (BSS); partner collaboration and oral health/chronic disease integration project addressing consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages in students state wide. CDC-RFA-DP18-1810 will allow KBOH to: 1.) expand the School Sealant Program to include as a measurable outcome target to increase by a minimum of 5% the number of eligible schools with dental sealant programs from the current baseline data obtained from 2013-18 project period reporting; 2.) increase the number of people served by optimal levels of Community Water Fluoridation; 3.) utilize surveillance to monitor prevalence, trends, to inform programmatic and policy decision making to improve population oral health; and 4.) expand and promote the Thirsty for Health Initiative to educate and increase awareness of the effects of sugar sweetened beverage consumption and increase use of water for improved oral health outcomes and decreased dental disease in child populations in Kansas. i.
