The Idaho Oral Health Program within the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare is requesting funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to implement evidence-based approaches to improve oral health outcomes by decreasing dental caries, oral health disparities, and other co-morbid chronic diseases associated with poor oral health. The Idaho Oral Health Program (IOHP) will partner with internal and external organizations to implement school sealant programs, community water fluoridation, oral health surveillance, and medical-dental integration. The program will support strategies such as the expansion of its current school sealant program, implementation of messaging and media campaigns on community water fluoridation, and management of the Idaho Online Surveillance System and dissemination of findings statewide. The IOHP will also implement medical-dental integration quality improvement projects with a focus on cardiovascular disease and oral health and pilot a bi-directional medical-dental referral system. The outcomes for this project are to increase the number of eligible schools participating in the school sealant program and number of children ages 6-14 years of age receiving sealants on one or more of their permanent molars; increase the percent of individuals, organizations, and healthcare professionals educated on the benefits of community water fluoridation, and, ultimately, increase the proportion of individuals served by community water fluoridation; increase the number of individuals referred to a primary care provider for cardiovascular disease by screening for hypertension in the dental clinic; and increase the number of medical professionals screening for oral disease in patients with cardiovascular disease.
