The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) is a program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). AJCC sets the standard for validating, revising, refining and publishing the TNM cancer staging system that is used worldwide as the foundation for patient care and surveillance. The AJCC Cancer Staging Manual, Eighth Edition (8th Edition) is the latest iteration of the TNM staging which incorporates relevant prognostic factors for several diseases, making cancer staging more relevant for both the treating physicians at the individual level as well as the surveillance community at the population level. The 8th Edition features approximately 104 unique staging systems for the majority of human neoplasia. The 8th Edition staging rules and classifications are effective for all cancer cases diagnosed on or after January 1, 2018. The 8th Edition is the foundation of data collection for the CDC National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR), the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program (NCI's SEER program), the ACS Commission on Cancer (CoC) and the convening umbrella organization, North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR). As the curators of this foundational system, AJCC is in a unique and privileged position to collaborate with standard setting agencies and organizations across the United States to develop, disseminate, implement and enchance data standards and best practices for improved operation of cancer registries. The Cancer Staging Collaboration and Implementation project will support the CDC's mission to collaboratively define and promote uniform standards in cancer staging, collection and reporting by delivering machine-readable AJCC content to NPCR software developers; contributing AJCC-specific educational content and support to NPCR Education and Training Coordinators and hospital cancer registrars; and convening regular meetings to facilitate collaborative appro aches to implements AJCC staging standards.
