ALASKA’S SCHOOL HEALTH AND WELLNESS PROJECT SUMMARY The State of Alaska Department of Education & Early Development is applying for funding from CDC to improve student health and academic achievement through nutrition, physical activity and the management of chronic conditions in Alaska’s public schools for the next five years under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) DP 18-1801 Cooperative Agreement. The funding requested for the first year is $355,462. The Alaska School Health and Wellness Project is a collaborative between the Departments of Education & Early Development and Health and Social Services. The project builds upon the collective work that the Departments share with an established School Health and Safety Framework (plan), the Alaska School Health Collaborative (interagency workgroup), the annual Alaska School Health and Wellness Institute (now is its 13th year), as well as the successful work the state has done related to school obesity prevention under the current CDC -1305 grant. The project will expand the Alaska School Health Collaborative into a coalition, will provide support for districts to attend professional development at the annual Alaska School Health and Wellness Institute and will offer distance education utilizing the Department of Education’s established eLearning System, CDC’s eLearning Modules, and webinars. The project will promote and support the use of the CDC School Health Index, develop a cadre of trainers to provide professional development on best practices in nutrition, physical activity, health and physical education, provide technical assistance to school districts. The Department will continue to collect, assess and provide technical assistance to districts promoting the Alaska Gold Standard Wellness Policy. The project will also tackle the obstacles of chronic disease management of students in a state where there are few school health services. The project will serve all 53 school districts (130,000 students) in the largest state in the nation. Over the five-year period, the project will work closely with five targeted school districts (urban and rural) who have high numbers of Alaska Native/American Indian students, low socioeconomic status, and who may lack access to either healthy food, physical activity opportunities, or school health services. Sub-grants will be awarded to districts for training, wellness team activities and resources, and data collection and reporting. With funding from this grant, the Department of Health and Social Services will be conducting the program evaluation.
