Priority 1 Project Abstract Summary Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) seeks funding for Healthy Students, Stronger Learners Tennessee (HSSLT), under NOFO 1801 Priority 1: Improving Student Health and Academic Achievement through Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Management of Chronic Health Conditions in Schools Funding Opportunity Announcement. Through this proposal, TDOE will apply successes and learned skills in coordinated school health. This knowledge and skill will be used to support implementation and evaluation of evidence-based strategies and activities to prevent obesity and reduce the risk of children and adolescents developing chronic disease in adulthood, and managing chronic health conditions prevalent in student populations. Targeted strategies during HSSLT will result in measurable impacts to improve student health and academic achievement throughout the state. These efforts are supported by core school and public health activities like: implementing evidence-based school health policies, practices and programs that increase opportunities for healthy eating, physical activity and management of chronic health conditions during the school day, as well as, during out-of-school time. Through systematic partnerships currently in place with the Tennessee Department of Health local education agencies (LEA), Alliance for a Healthier Generation, Middle Tennessee State University, the Society of State Leaders of Health and Physical Education and many other key state and local community partners, are the foundation of HSSLT. The following outcomes will be addressed throughout the five year project in the proposal. Using YRBS student survey, School Health Profiles and our performance measures, TDOE will demonstrate improved outcomes of increased access to healthy foods and beverages by 2%, increased Comprehensive School Physical Activity Programs (CSPAP) by 3%, and increased management of chronic conditions by 2 % at the school level. The long-term outcomes of HSSLT will increase the percentage of student consuming vegetables 3 or more times per day by 2%, increase the percentage of student consuming fruit or fruit juices twice or more per day by 2%, and increase the percentage of student participating in physical activity for 60 minutes per day by 3% at the student level. Within Year 1, HSSLT will increase the knowledge and skill of individuals trained to improve school health by providing at least 2 in-person professional development and training to each of our priority districts and statewide. The work of Tennessee’s Coordinated School Health program over the past ten years has resulted in statewide improvements that address state specific needs and reflect the efforts of LEAs. There has been substantial effort to foster collaboration and coordination among schools, to leverage resources and align goals and objectives. Moving forward our goals will be focused on the clear and achievable outcomes aligned to the 1801 project. HSSLT guarantees school health stakeholders direction and support in developing policies, practices and programs to address improving health and academic achievement of all children and adolescents and management of chronic health conditions in Tennessee.
