Project GET FIT! - The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE), in collaboration with the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) and other stakeholders, is seeking funding under Priority 1 to implement the Get Fit! Project This project will impact 513 LEAs in the state, with a specific emphasis on five high need, at-risk LEAs. Statewide, the Get Fit! Project will impact 40,851 teachers and 693,710 students while the targeted area will impact 478 teachers and 4,005 students. The purpose of this project is to 1) increase student access to nutritious food and beverages; 2) increase opportunities for student participation in daily PE and physical activity; 3) increase access to case management services for students with chronic health conditions; 4) increase teacher access to professional development and training; and 5) increase access to evidence-based best practices and programs to improve the health of Oklahoma students. Shrinking budgets, together with the increased emphasis on academic achievement have made it common practice in Oklahoma to increase the amount of instructional time in schools by reducing the number of opportunities for physical education and activity, such as recess, offered to children in school. However, several studies show that reassigning educational time for school-based physical activity has no negative effect on achievement. Educationally relevant health disparities, such as vision, asthma, teen pregnancy, aggression and violence, physical activity, breakfast, and inattention/hyperactivity, impede motivation and the ability to learn through at least five causal pathways: sensory perceptions, cognition, connectedness and engagement with school, absenteeism, and school dropout. Partners for this project will include five target LEAs, Okmulgee, Wilson, Morris, Henryetta, and Calvin Public Schools, all located in northeastern Oklahoma approximately 60 miles south of Tulsa, OK. In addition, community partners will include the Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Office, Project ECHO, Muskogee (Creek) Nation, BancFirst, and Cooking for Kids. Partnerships will increase over the course of the five years. Outcomes for the proposed project include short, intermediate, and long-term measurements for success including: • Increasing skill among individuals trained to improve student health; • Increasing the percentage of schools that do not sell less healthy food and beverages; • Increasing percentage of schools that have established, implemented and /or evaluated a Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program; • Increasing the percentage of schools that provide case management for students with chronic health conditions; • Increasing the percentage of students who eat three or more vegetables per day; • Increasing the percentage of students who eat fruit or drink 100% fruit juices two or more times per day; and • Increasing the percentage of students participating in 60 minutes of daily physical activity Activities have been aligned to the three required strategies including infrastructure development, professional development and training, and technical assistance. Existing and new grant staff from the Oklahoma State Department of Education will provide services in collaboration with staff from the Oklahoma State Department of Health. The evaluation will be completed by members of an evaluation team from the Oklahoma State Department of Health and will include specific evaluation questions, performance measure collection plans, and key program stakeholder engagement strategies.
