Approximately 69% of adults and 31.2% of high school students in Nebraska (NE) are considered overweight or obese. The Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) is submitting this application in response to CDC-RFA-DP18-1801, entitled “Improving Student Health and Academic Achievement through Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Management of Chronic Conditions in Schools” to further combat the burden of chronic diseases such as childhood obesity. All strategies outlined will be addressed at the state level with a specific focus on priority Local Education Agencies (LEAs) identified. Local Health Departments (LHDs) have been selected to support the diverse priority LEAs and feature a mix of complementary strengths and experience that will propel local work. The NDE has selected the 4 LHDs based on data that demonstrates high disease burden and risk factors, the potential for having a significant reach among NE residents, and that demonstrate a high ability and readiness to complete work previously coordinated through public health funding opportunities. Many of the activities proposed in the application are complementary of efforts already in progress in Nebraska, utilizing existing partnerships and department staff with extensive experience in school health, health promotion, chronic disease epidemiology and surveillance, and program evaluation. This expertise and technical assistance will be available to the communities as support throughout the course of the grant. In the short-term, expected outcomes include increases in individuals whose skill in improving school health has increased as a result of receiving professional development and training. Long-term outcomes include increases in the percentage of students who ate vegetables, who ate fruit, and who participate in daily physical activity.
