Native Health proposes to continue the Tribal Practices for Wellness in Indian Country project by promoting cultural values and traditions to build resiliency and connections to the community. We plan to improve the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health and wellbeing within our community by offering cultural activities. In supporting this project there will be an implementation of activities across generations, activities to infuse indigenous foods into diets, and activities to increase physical activity.Native Health will seek to reconnect the urban AI/AN target population to their ancestral source of well-being and balance, intergenerational interaction and traditionally based activities will serve as a reminder of that ancestral connection. For many AI/AN, health and systems for healing go beyond what is in the clinical setting, as this project will seek to re-educate families about the importance of traditional food sources and a return to physical activity. There are healing mechanisms found through the traditional ways of life that have power to resonate with the community today in foods grown locally and physical activity sources in the community.Native Health will employ strategies and outcomes of increased number of AI/AN reporting stronger understanding of and engagement in healthy living practices:"Strategy 5: Increased intergenerational interactions with a positive impact on wellbeing. This strategy will engage families in various culturally based activities and will provide opportunities for intergenerational discussion and connections. The activities will result in at least an average of 15 families participating in cultural learning activities."Strategy 6: Increased inclusion of traditional foods in diets. This component will include traditional food demonstrations and garden educational workshops provided by the Native Health Garden Coordinator or indigenous field experts. Through this activity it is anticip ated 25 families will harvest and utilize foods from the Native Health Community and Traditional Garden and will infuse these foods in their daily diets."Strategy 7: Increased participation in traditional and contemporary physical activity events. The agency will provide opportunities for families to participate in traditional and contemporary physical activities. The focus will be on youth and their families in the Wellness Warriors program to strive for active indigenous lifestyles across the lifespan. It is anticipated an average of 20 families will participate consistently in a 6-month walking program. The premise is to build a lifetime of physical fitness goals.
