This response to CDC-RFA-DP18-181PPHF18, Tribal Practices for Wellness InIndian Country is submitted on behalf of the Community Health & DevelopmentDepartment of Salish Kootenai College (SKC) campus, located on the Flathead IndianReservation, in Pablo, Montana. The purpose of this project is to improve health andwell-being outcomes for SKC students and their families by incorporating culturalactivities that inform healthier food choices and physical activity. While the projecttargets SKC students, and residential students, participation is open to anyone fromthe surrounding community. SKC is centrally located on the reservation, and apopular venue for community events.The project is grounded in three strategies that build a bridge between healthytraditional ways of life, and contemporary options. These strategies are: (1) familyand community activities that connect cultural teachings to health and wellness, (2)intergenerational learning opportunities that support wellbeing and resilience, (3)traditional and contemporary physical activities that strengthen wellbeing. Theactivities to support these strategies include local workshops to learn dehydrationfood preservation techniques, traditional stories that align with the seasons, handson involvement in the local community garden, and physical activity programs forchildren that integrate traditional games with contemporary physical activity.The projected outcomes include increased families that choose to preserve foodsand add them to an annual diet, along with an understanding of traditional methodsused to keep tribal members healthy and active. Additional outcomes includeincreased children who understand the difference between food that promoteswellness, and food that does not, and the importance of movement and physicalactivity to maintain wellness for a lifetime. Overall, all participants will leave with anunderstanding of a comprehensive approach to wellness that includes makinghealthy food choices and incorporating movement in daily routines to improvehealth and decrease the risk of disease. Integrating tribal well-being practices willstrengthen resistance to chronic diseases like heart disease, stroke, cancer anddiabetes.
