Denver has one of the largest Urban Indian populations in the country. As a primary city for the Indian Relocation Act of 1956, and a centrally located corridor between the Southwest and Plains tribes, Denver serves as a crossroad for many of the local and regional tribal populations. American Indians/Alaska Natives in Denver have high rates of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and cancer. The Spirit Within (Wak?a? T?a?ka) Project aims to cultivate protective factors to address these health disparities, which include opportunities to participate in cultural activities, in particular those that support connection with community, the land, traditional foods, and traditional and contemporary physical activities. The Spirit Within Project (SWP) will focus on the following strategies (1) Strategy 4: Tribal, Inter-Tribal, governmental, and nongovernmental collaborations that strengthen wellbeing; (2) Strategy 6: Cultural teachings and practices about traditional healthy foods to promote health, sustenance and sustainability; and (3) Strategy 7: Traditional and contemporary physical activities that strengthen wellbeing. These activities in working toward these strategies include: engaging partners, health communications to connect community members with resources and activities, and conducting workshops and consultations. By the end of the three year project period, the SWP will work towards the following intermediate outcomes; (1) Increase number of community members reporting stronger understanding of and engagement in healthy living practices, (2) Increase number of community members who report that they are including traditional foods in their diets, (3) Increase number of community members who report that participating in traditional and contemporary physical activities strengthened their wellbeing. The SWP will work towards the following long-term outcomes; (1) Reduce morbidity/mortality due to diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and cancer, (2) I
ncrease resilience and use of cultural practices to reduce diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and cancer.DIHFS has both the ability and resources to complete the proposed project, with both clinical and non-clinical staff skilled in providing culturally competent, comprehensive health care, and prevention services specifically for A/IAN families and individuals. We have engaged the support of experienced collaborators with whom we have successfully worked with for years on similar projects. We have outstanding clients: individuals and families that (1) entrust us with their care and like that our clinic is a ?Native space? as opposed to a White or Hispanic/Latino space, (2) are eager to participate in our programs, (3) are interested in learning about any new programs and services, and (4) are very appreciative of the expertise and care we provide. DIHFS will contract with John Snow, Inc. (JSI), a research and consulting organization established in 1978, with a vision of improving health individuals and communities worldwide. JSI will act as the evaluator and local technical assistance (TA) and training provider.
