The Zunis are a large, traditional, and resilient Native American tribe who live in their historic homeland in the high-desert plateau of western New Mexico. The Zuni Pueblo is one of the oldest continually inhabited locations in North America and the Zuni are proud to have maintained their vibrant language, religion, calendar, and culture to this day. However, the Zuni?s have also suffered generations of trauma from Spanish and then Anglo settler colonists that has contributed to present-day issues of substance dependence, chronic physical and mental illness. The Zuni Youth Enrichment Project (ZYEP) is a tribal non-profit organization based in Zuni that promotes resilience and physical and mental health through culture, traditions, and physical activity. The purpose of the proposal described below is to engage Zunis of all generations in cultural and traditional activities that promote wellbeing and health and ultimately reduce mortality and morbidity from stroke, cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. ZYEP is proposing to advance this aim through the Tribal Practices for Wellness in Indian Country grant by building a series of internships with progressively increasing levels of participant responsibility that focus on engagement with Zuni culture, intergenerational connectivity, and traditional and contemporary sports. Specifically, we will adopt the following three strategies: first, to increase the availability of family and community activities that connect cultural teachings to health and wellness; second, augment intergenerational learning opportunities that support wellbeing and resilience; and third, provide opportunities for traditional and contemporary physical activities that strengthen wellbeing. Our expected outcomes for these strategies are to increase Zunis? 1) participation in family centered activities (core outcome); 2) understanding of and engagement in healthy living practices; 3) participation in intergenerational programs th at support wellbeing and resilience; 4) and finally participation in traditional and contemporary activities. To accomplish these outcomes and the first strategy, we will implement the following activities: internships in 1) traditional waffle gardening and Zuni cooking and nutrition; 2) traditional pottery making; 3) the performing arts. Regarding the second strategy we will create: 1) a film oral history internship; 2) a cultural advisory committee made up of Zuni elders and community leaders; 3) a Youth Tribal Council that will work closely with the official tribal council. For the third strategy, we will 1) create a stick-racing league, which is a traditional Zuni sport; 2) we will augment our current basketball, soccer, and flag football leagues; 3) and finally, we will increase participation in our summer camp program which focuses on culture and wellness. We will tie these activities together by adopting an approach of progressive responsibility for participants in each activity. To measure progress towards our intended outcomes, we will track participation and design and administer a pre- and post-activity survey. This approach of increasing levels of responsibility will impart a sense of purpose and intergenerational and communal engagement among participants. By providing these opportunities for communal and traditional activities we will be taking strong steps towards supporting Zuni?s inherent resilience, cultural engagement, and promoting health and reduced mortality and morbidity from diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and cancer.
