North Dakota Statewide Cancer Registry - This application is funding for North Dakota Statewide Cancer Registry (NDSCR), a population based central cancer registry. North Dakota has a high cancer burden and cancer disparities; cancer is consistently the first or second leading cause of death in ND each year. The population of ND is rapidly expanding, with most recent US Census reporting 756,000 persons, up dramatically from 642,000 in the last census. The population is also aging; ND has the highest % of population over 85 in the United States. The high burden of cancer with aging, as well as risk factors in the state, makes the work of the NDSCR critical to public health and prevention efforts.The NDSCR has expanded the quality measures of the registry in the last 5 years of management by the University of North Dakota. There are now professional, full-time CTR and experienced database and information technology systems people, overlaid with a strong medical base at the medical school, cancer epidemiology, and strong links to public health initiatives. The registry has data of the highest quality and timeliness; it has maintained GOLD certification for all five years of UND Pathology management AND in the last three years is designated as a ?Registry of Excellence? by the CDC. This application proactively addresses stronger alliances with public health, data gathering /access /use as part of the core functions of NDSCR. The application continues to expand use and reporting of cancer by electronic means, and increase interactions with public health, chronic disease and cancer programs. It further proposes enhanced collection of pre-malignant precursors, enhanced screening information and prognostic markers of cancer.
