Project title:Strengthening of epidemic intelligence for influenza and respiratory diseases at national and subnational levels in Egypt in context with public health securityProject Abstract Summary:i. BackgroundInfluenza and respiratory diseases pandemics are unpredictable and can have severe consequences on societies worldwide. In preparation for this threat, Egypt has a well- established national influenza and respiratory diseases surveillance system. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain a robust national influenza and respiratory diseases surveillance system that provides sufficiently valid data for estimates of influenza and respiratory diseases medical burden in Egypt and ensure early detection and rapid response. ii. Purpose To decrease the national impact of influenza viruses and other respiratory diseases and to ensure a timely response with recommendations on appropriate public health measures.iii. Outcomes1. Short term to intermediate outcomes? Improved communication between MOHP and MOA? Better use of influenza and other respiratory diseases data to conduct prevention and control measures? Improved performance of influenza and ARI surveillance system? Improved testing capacity for influenza and other respiratory diseases specimens, both quality and quantity? Influenza-positive samples available for use in vaccine strain selections"? Improved adherence to the WHO Pandemic Influenza Preparedness (PIP) framework? Strengthened coordination and robust emergency preparedness and response capacities2. Long term outcomes? Sustainability of integrated surveillance system?
