Florida is a large state geographically and in population (21.54 million in 2022, with 134 million visitors annually, many of whom are international. Given the state’s large and globally mobile population and the number of health care facilities involved, emerging infections present challenges for Florida. The activities proposed in this grant will strengthen communication and collaboration between public health and multiple partners across the spectrum of health care to address the challenges presented in detecting, responding, preventing and controlling highly infectious diseases. Capacity sustained by this Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity for Infectious Diseases (ELC) funding opportunity will help support program specific components in the areas of healthcare-associated infections, zoonotic, vector borne, antimicrobial resistance, and food and waterborne surveillance. ELC funds will integrate epidemiology and laboratory capacity activities and improve health information systems for tracking trends in known and emerging infectious diseases. Together these activities will support and enhance early detection of and rapid response to disease outbreaks, as well as evaluation of public health interventions.
