Using the infrastructure established through previous Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cooperative agreements, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), Birth Defects Education and Outreach Program, in collaboration with the MDHHS Division for Vital Records and Health Statistics, proposes to strengthen Michigan’s birth defects surveillance capacity to respond to emerging threats to mothers and babies as a key component of preparedness, identify and address mechanisms contributing to health disparities, and improve health outcomes among affected populations. Implementation objectives include improving birth defects surveillance capacity by leveraging electronic health records and interoperability capabilities, improving birth defects data quality, and using surveillance data to improve primary and secondary prevention of birth defects.
