This project will create the Rockies and High Plains VEctor borne diseases Center for training and evaluation (RaHP VEC) in intermountain state regions of the United States (CO, UT, NM, WY, the TX panhandle). The core institutions funded by the CDC in RaHP VEC will be Colorado State University (CSU), Colorado Department of Health and the Environment (CDPHE), Texas Tech University (TTU) and Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement District (SLCMAD). The center will develop capacity to address established and future vector borne disease (VBD) threats in our uniquely at-risk region. This will be accomplished by developing extensive and diverse training programs for university/college students and public health/vector control professionals around VBDs and best practices to assess their threats, to communicate their risks to the public, to prevent their spread and to control VBD outbreaks. To ensure up-to-date and best practices in our training programs, RaHP VEC will simultaneously implement programs to evaluate current and new VBD prevention and control tools, strategies and programs at state and local agencies across our intermountain region. This all will be accomplished by a strong partnership of regionally based universities and colleges, state and local public health agencies, CDC-funded organizations, federal agencies, and vector-control professionals/organizations.
