AAMC Improving Clinical and Public Health Outcomes through National Partnerships to Prevent and Control Emerging and Re-Emerging Infectious Disease Threats - The AAMC is already engaged in and committed to rapid dissemination of clinical guidance and integration of best practices in the face of public health crises, as evidenced by our past work on the Ebola outbreak, ongoing efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, and just-released road map entitled "The Way Forward on COVID-19: A Road Map to Reset the Nation's Approach to the Pandemic." Our membership, networks, and extensive experience and expertise managing collaborations make us uniquely suited to provide the leadership necessary to respond to emerging and re-emerging infectious disease threats like COVID-19. The AAMC will engage and equip its extensive and diverse membership and partner organizations to enhance dissemination, adoption, and integration of clinical guidance and best practices to mitigate infectious disease threats and optimize health care outcomes by building on existing AAMC strategies and programs. We will expand AAMC’s Coronavirus Clinical Guidance Repository, develop and grow clinical leader virtual learning communities and collaboratives, develop and implement leadership training, and use ongoing input from clinical advisors and frontline health care workers (HCWs) to develop new strategies and programs. We will develop targeted trainings for different groups of HCWs and leaders and use AAMC’s extensive existing networks to facilitate collaborations between academic medical centers (AMCs) and their community partners to reach at-risk populations. We will deliver live virtual training sessions on CDC clinical guidelines to AMC faculty and clinicians. We will convene experts, including an AAMC Infectious Disease Advisory Panel to support and inform the CDC and AAMC regarding the needs of patient populations at risk for infectious diseases; a Multidisciplinary and Interprofessional Advisory Panel to provide expert advice and frontline perspectives on aligning the work on COVID-19 with quality and safety initiatives and help identify opportunities for interprofessional collaboration; and an Emerging Infectious Diseases and Health Equity Advisory Committee to provide input and local guidance regarding tools and resources to address health care equity and emerging infectious diseases. The AAMC will measurably increase the number of personnel trained in best practices for the prevention and control of infectious diseases, increase the adoption and implementation of best practices to protect workers and communities, expand the participation and reach of living-learning networks among populations in high-risk environments, and evaluate new and existing infectious disease and prevention control resources. We will develop and disseminate electronic health record (EHR) and telehealth tools. We will develop integrated and cross-subspecialty networks for information sharing and problem-solving, and will ensure that our networks extend specifically to reach populations that are at increased risk for infectious diseases. Ultimately, as a nation we will see fewer health care associated infections of COVID-19 or other emerging infectious disease threat among patients and HCWs, and improved clinical outcomes for patients at increased risk for emerging infectious diseases. Throughout, AAMC will continuously center evaluation and improvement in an ongoing partnership with the CDC. We will also continuously leverage our member-AMCs and health systems to reach populations in environments at increased risk for infectious diseases like COVID-19, including under-resourced rural and urban communities, non-English speaking populations, people with limited health literacy, people who identify as LGBTQ+, native populations, people with disabilities, other at-risk minority populations, older adults, and others in congregate living environments including those in the criminal justice system, immunocompromised persons, essential workers, and/or other populations with increased risk.
