Campus COVID-19 Vaccination and Mitigation Initiative (CoVAC) - II. “Project Abstract Summary” The American College Health Association (ACHA) is proposing, “Combating COVID-19 in Higher Education” (CCHE), in response to RFA-CK20-2003. ACHA is the only association dedicated to all facets of college health & well-being and counts among its membership: doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants; mental health counselors, psychologists and psychiatrists; and other allied health professionals. With over four million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and over 145,000 resulting deaths, there is an urgent need for infection prevention and control across the United States. Many college students will be returning to campuses and communal living, cafeterias and classroom settings in the Fall - where there is a well-known increased risk for transmission of infectious diseases. Now, more than ever, college-based front-line health care providers (HCPs) need timely and relevant guidance; tailored health messaging with accurate information for diverse student populations, and new training opportunities to effectively implement COVID-19 infection control programs. Finally, administrators and HCP’s will need up-to-date relevant data regarding COVID-19 metrics to make informed decisions. The ultimate purpose of ACHA’s application is to prevent and control infectious diseases on college campuses – in particular, COVID-19. The project will improve public health messaging by creating communication toolkits for front-line HCPs to utilize with diverse student populations, disseminate and adapt relevant CDC guidance, notices and other information for HCP’s and students. The project will also develop training modules targeted toward higher education HCPs to adapt COVID-19 related programs, and to expand an existing ACHA data repository, the Connected College Health Network (CCHN), to include relevant COVID-19 data for secondary analysis and use by HCPs and administrators when adapting and updating infection prevention and control measures and strategies for their campuses. The outcomes for this project include: Increased distribution of existing guidance for the prevention and control of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases to front-line HCPs and other allied health professionals on college campuses through its comprehensive and established networks; Adaptation of existing CDC guidance to increase adoption in front-line HCPs who regularly engage in the prevention and control of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases on college campuses by utilizing an expert Advisory Steering Committee; and Increased number of personnel who are trained and understand best practices for the prevention and control of COVID-19 through the development of relevant COVID-19 prevention and control training modules. Finally, this project will work towards the long-term outcome of fewer community-acquired infections across institutions of higher education by employing the above activities and strategies.
