TickED - Tickborne Disease Education and Training for Emergency Physicians - Frontline National Partnership to Control and Prevent Infectious Disease Threats American College of Emergency Physicians Emergency care is the lynchpin of effective communication and coordination between the public, the acute healthcare system and emergency response agencies. When an infectious disease threat strikes, the emergency care system is the first to respond. It is essential that this first response is strong, informed, and protected. Given the right guidance, appropriate care can be initiated early, and protections taken to minimize casualties. In addition, the emergency care system is in a unique position to inform the public, as well as other clinicians who will subsequently provide care. It can, and does, provide essential public health information back to federal and state agencies. The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) has put together a strong team of frontline healthcare providers, including emergency care physicians, nurses, physician assistants, EMS directors, and paramedics, to effectively and rapidly respond to emerging and re-emerging infectious disease threats in our nation. These national partners include American Academy of Emergency Nurse Practitioners (AAENP); Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine (CORD-EM); Eagles; Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association (EMRA); Emergency Nurses Association (ENA); National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP); National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT); and Society of Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants (SEMPA). This Emergency Medicine (EM) Network of over 200,000 frontline clinical healthcare providers will partner with the CDC to prevent and control the spread of infectious diseases. We will provide the expertise and reach to effectively meet the goals of four Strategies: 1) Disseminate and Adopt; 2) Inform and Adapt; 3) Target and Train; and 4) Integrate and Extend. We will work alongside the CDC to ensure a nationwide distribution and adoption of existing infectious disease guidance, clinical guidelines and best practices. The EM Network will provide infectious disease experts and feedback from frontline workers to assist the CDC in updating guidance resources and tools. Emergency healthcare providers will be trained on the latest evidence-based best practices to treat their patients, slow the spread of the disease, and protect themselves and the community. We will implement rapid living-learning networks to facilitate sharing of information and data on the effect of infectious disease on communities, patients and healthcare providers. The EM Network is ready to assist the CDC in meeting long-term goals of 1) Increased rapid communications/information sharing between healthcare specialties, federal and state public health entities and at-risk populations; 2) Fewer healthcare associated infections among emergency healthcare providers and patients; 3) Fewer community-acquired infections across public and private settings; 4) Improved clinical outcomes among vulnerable patients at-risk for emerging infectious diseases; 5) Decreased health disparities among lower income, racial and ethnic minorities, rural populations, and others with increased risk of infections.
