Georgia's Expansion of Suicide Prevention Activities - CDC-RFA-CE22-2204, Expansion of Comprehensive Suicide Prevention Across the U.S. Georgia Project Abstract Summary Applicant: Georgia Department of Public Health For 30 years, the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) Injury Prevention Program (IPP), has developed, implemented, and evaluated cross-agency and cross-sector programs, data collection efforts, and initiatives, to support injury and violence prevention, and to improve the safety and wellbeing of Georgians. In partnership with organizations such as the National Alliance for Mental Illness, Georgia Department of Veterans Services, and the Youth Commission in Clayton County, DPH IPP submits this application in response to CDC-RFA-CE22-2204, to create and implement a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention for two disproportionately affected populations (DAPs). This proposal will help GA to improve coordinated comprehensive suicide prevention (CSP), increase use of timely surveillance data to inform prevention, conduct ongoing implementation and evaluation to close prevention gaps, and ultimately reduce suicide mortality and morbidity in the state. Through this funding opportunity, IPP will implement CSP approaches through the following strategies: 1) Convene and connect multi-sectoral partners, 2) Use surveillance data to understand the contributors to suicide and suicidal behaviors and track both morbidity and mortality trends, 3) assess gaps in programming, 4) Implement suicide prevention strategies and approaches from the CDC suicide prevention technical package, and 5) Communicate progress, trends, lessons learned, and success to partners. The approaches will be implemented with attention to two DAPs (DAP1 and DAP2): ▪ DAP1 represents military and emergency services personnel residing in Georgia, identified as anyone who has served within any branch of the military including the reserves and those in First Responder professions ▪ DAP2 represents Black youth ages 10-24 years of age that live within Clayton County, GA. Strategy 4 (implementation of strategies and approaches from the CDC suicide prevention technical package) will include the implementation of three complementary suicide prevention strategies and approaches across both DAPs. The table below details the selected complementary strategies, approaches, populations of focus, and corresponding program and practice identified for the proposal.
