Maine Comprehensive Suicide Prevention Project - The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (MCDC) and the Maine Suicide Prevention Program (MSPP) propose to implement evidence-based strategies for reducing suicide deaths and attempts among vulnerable populations. The MSPP will take a comprehensive, systematic approach to building state capacity to prevent suicide, and will leverage strong community partnerships and engage new stakeholders to inform all suicide prevention interventions. To achieve these outcomes, MCDC will implement the following strategies and activities: Tier 1: Community-based interventions • (B) Identifying and supporting people at risk through (1) Gatekeeper training such as (a) Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). • (D) Promoting connectedness through (1) peer norm programs including (a) Sources of Strength (SOS). • (E) Lessen harms and prevent future risk by providing (1) postvention supports such as (a) Standby. Tier 2: Health-care related interventions • (F) Strengthen access and delivery of suicide-safer care (1) through systems change by implementing the (a) Zero Suicide model. Tier 3: Upstream interventions • (J) Strengthen access and delivery of suicide care by (2) reducing provider shortages in underserved areas by promoting (b) telemental health. As a result of the strategies and activities proposed in this application, the MCDC and the MSPP will: • Increase state leadership and capacity to enact effective suicide prevention initiatives; • Increase the use of evidence-based suicide prevention practices among providers and in clinical settings serving vulnerable populations (rural Mainers, adults over the age of 45, and LGBT youth); • Increase the dissemination of surveillance data to inform data-driven suicide prevention community interventions; • Decrease emergency room visits and hospital discharges for nonfatal suicidal behavior by 10% over the 5-year grant period; • Decrease suicide deaths by 10% of over the 5-year grant period. The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention has a long history of engaging with community partners to provide innovative suicide-prevention interventions across many sectors. We believe these efforts will have a positive impact on the well-being of our communities by reducing Maine’s rate of suicide deaths and suicide attempts.
