Viejas Holistic Healthcare Program - The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians is a federally recognized Indian Tribe located in East San Diego County. In San Diego County, American Indians/Alaska Native (AIAN) residents bear a significant burden of poor mental, physical, and behavioral health outcomes, including alcohol use, illicit substance use, and diabetes. Conventional efforts to improve the health status of AIAN people have not been as effective as desired. Research conclusions consistently recommend that prevention and health care programs implement traditional practices and philosophies, but barriers prevent successful implementation of culturally tailored interventions in our region. These findings illustrate the need for effective and holistic healthcare programs for the AIAN communities. Through the current funding opportunity, the Yaytaanak Wellness Center at Viejas will develop and implement culturally grounded public health messaging and programs identified by community members through a community-based participatory approach. Our mission is to promote the well-being of our people by integrating ancestral wisdom, cultural practices, and Western medicine. We are confident that by implementing these activities, we will improve health literacy, increase healthcare access and utilization, and reduce the health disparities that have long affected our Tribal and community members.
