Category C: State Education Agencies - Building stronger partnerships between public health and state departments of education provides an impactful opportunity to support our nation’s students in developing functional health knowledge and health-related skills that are critical to improving health literacy. This project proposes to build the capacity of state departments of education and health by providing technical assistance, professional learning, access to instructional and policy resources, brokering partnerships, and engaging in thought leadership that will ensure school-based health education and physical education’s impact on improving health literacy, promoting physical activity, addressing chronic conditions, and reducing health disparities to drive the nation’s public health goals forward. The project proposed by SHAPE America will improve the organizational capacity and effectiveness of state departments of education to provide standards-based health education and physical education training in their states. This will lead to: increased availability of and access to capacity building assistance that addresses the strategic areas of Organizational Capacity, Workforce, and Policy and Programs; increased awareness of best practices and tools by state departments of education and school-based health and physical educators; and improved capacity to address equity focused public health priorities. This will then lead to the long-term outcomes of the adoption of state and local level policies that improve the quality and quantity of health education and physical education offered in schools, an increase in the implementation of recommended school health policies and practices, and an improved capacity for state departments of education to address equity-focused public health priorities through their school-based health and physical education programs.
