,The American Public Health Association (APHA) proposes working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other partners to provide capacity building assistance that systematically improves the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of the public health system. The target population for the proposed initiative is persons in formal leadership roles of non-profit, voluntary, and private entities that support public health services delivery systems. The overarching outcomes for the proposed work include public health systems infrastructure; communication and information technology; partnerships; laws and policies; and programs and services. The strategies will build key capacities and capabilities of the public health system through seven core programs: 1) Improving Children?s Environmental Health Services; 2) Ensuring Equitable Access to Safe Drinking Water; 3) Promoting and Supporting National Accreditation; 4) Integrating Public Health Prevention in Schools to Improve Health and Education Outcomes; 5) Improving Executive Decision Making among STLT Officials; 6) Health Communication and Marketing; and 7) Advancing Extreme Weather Risks Communication.Highlights of programs include advancing the use of accreditation, workforce infrastructure, performance assessments, and workforce competencies; translating scientific research for application in public health policy and practice; extreme weather risk communication; increasing the utilization of public health services among non-governmental leaders, community members, and other stakeholders; and improving ability to accurately inform and communicate critical information to the public, communities, and other actors in the public health system. APHA?s nearly 150 year history, partnership network, and proven success providing capacity building assistance well qualifies the organization to undertake and execute the proposed initiative.
